Tab Bars for Compact Dropdown-Style Animation
Tab Bar menus are a good choice if you have numerous sublevels but limited vertical space. The sublevels can either overprint your page elements, as shown by the image element, or not overprint, as shown by the text element.
  Pros
Easy to create and update. Easy to add or remove primary buttons or sublevels.
Nine different base styles that can be customized to complement your site's color and style.
Dropdowns can overprint the elements below them (see hover on Section 1 for image).
Images can be used for the over and hover states.
A momentary delay can be included so that the dropdowns don't appear immediately (as shown).
Three different animation styles: down, over and down, and over as down.
Sublevels can be made persistent so that they don't disappear when the mouse is moved away from the primary level.
  Cons
Tab Bar menus work only in a horizontal orientation.
If you don't want the dropdowns to overprint elements below them, space must be left to avoid this (see hover on Section 7 for text below).
Image-based styles take longer to set up and are therefore more expensive.
Even with persistent sublevels, if the mouse drops below the image area of the Tab Bar, the sublevels will disappear. This is most noticable on Section 11 because of a tendency to move the mouse in an arch that drops it over the text. This tendency can be mitigated if the number of sublevels reaches the edge of the Section 11 button.
